He helped to turn around Air Force and make them a potential NCAA tournament team before leaving for Colorado.

Gaudio helped lead the team to two NCAA tournament appearances in his three years as head coach.

He was previously an assistant but took over under difficult circumstances following the sudden death of Skip Prosser.

The school said the team’s struggles late in the season and in the postseason was the basis for the firing.

Wake Forest has stumbled down the stretch in recent years after looking like a strong team early in the season.

The sophomore has already announced he will hire an agent, which eliminates any chance of returning to school.

He is widely regarded as a first round pick, giving him the blessing of head coach Dino Gaudio.

There are questions about his outside jump shot and ability to handle the basketball, but he hopes to answer those in the coming months.

Wake Forest has been hit particularly hard over the past few years by underclassmen leaving early for the NBA.

It was a very bad matchup for Wake Forest, who thought they had the speed and athletes to keep pace with Kentucky.

They were very sadly mistaken, and their up-tempo game played right into Kentucky’s hands.

To be honest, Wake Forest hasn’t played well since the early part of the ACC schedule and was lucky to draw another sputtering team in the first round.

Had the Demon Deacons drawn any of the other No. 8 seeds, they probably wouldn’t have reached the second round of the tournament.

If Thursday’s overtime victory over Texas to open the NCAA Tournament was the ultimate high for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, then Saturday’s second-round game was the equivalent of crashing back to Earth.

No. 1 seed Kentucky broke open a close game with a 25-9 run during the final 11 minutes of the first half, and the Demon Deacons were finished. Kentucky led by as many as 31 points in the second half in ending Wake’s season with a 90-60 blowout in the East Regional in New Orleans.

Wake (20-11) shot just 32 percent from the field and saw the Wildcats hit on 60 percent of their shots. Leading scorer Al-Farouq Aminu picked up his third foul with 11:39 left in the first half, the score tied at 19. By the time halftime arrived, Wake trailed 44-28 and this one was over.

Aminu finished with a team-high 16 points. C.J. Harris added 11 for Wake, which won a splendid game against Texas in its NCAA opener, 81-80 in overtime on Thursday. But there would be no such luck in this one, as Kentucky did everything it wanted to in the final 30 minutes.

Wake had dropped five of its past six before entering the NCAAs.

It’s a terribly disappointing effort and loss by Wake Forest, who was battling for a top spot in the ACC.

The Demon Deacons have now slipped down to fourth place and are two games behind the Terps and Hokies for second/third place.

A lot of the loss can be pinned on Wake’s outside shooting. The team was 0-12 from three-point range.

It’s not a secret that the Demon Deacons struggle from the outside, so expect a lot more zone from opponents in the coming weeks.

It was a fantastic basketball game that was close right down to the wire, with the Hokies making a couple of plays down the stretch.

Trailing by a handful with under a minute left, Wake Forest continued to battle and eventually cut it to a one possession game.

Having Ishmael Smith’s blazing speed and quickness is a huge asset in late game situations because he can get from one end to the other and score with little time coming off the clock.

Still, it was too little, too late from Wake Forest, who now falls into fourth place in the conference.

Al-Farouq Aminu had 19 points and 10 rebounds to pace Wake Forest, and Ishmael Smith reached 1,000 points for his career and hit the game-winner with over a minute to play.

Smith continued his do-it all ability, finishing with 10 points, eight assists and six rebounds in the winning effort.

Aminu said afterward that he thinks all of the pieces are starting to come together for the Demon Deacons and that things are flowing much better than earlier in the year.

The win keeps the Demon Deacons just one game behind the Duke Blue Devils and tied with a couple of others for second place in the ACC.

Wake Forest continues to play well at home, which is very important in the ultra-competitive conference.

They got off to a quick start, which enabled them to take a nine-point lead into halftime and never relinquish it.

It was not their sharpest performance of the season, however, as they allowed a 17-point first-half lead to dwindle to three.

Star point guard Ishmael Smith had 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists to lead the Demon Deacons.
